Good news is tough to come by for UTV Ignition.

In just the last few weeks, the company has ceased internal development, had to delay one of its biggest titles and (according to rumors) re-canceled WarDevil after recently resurrecting it. Today Gamasutra reports that the company has laid off some portion of its True Games studio, the house behind the Faxion Online MMO.

Exactly what portion of the studio is being laid off is a matter of some debate. While Ignition claims it's "a fraction" of the studio's workforce, Gamasutra's source says it's a majority of the staff. Yes, majority is technically a fraction, but still ... that's quite a stretch. Here's hoping we'll have a clearer picture of the landscape soon and that those affected land on their feet.

Former 'News of the World' journalist Sean Hoare has been found dead today, just as news about the scandal involving the paper hits new heights.

Undoubtedly, over the past week, you have read the scandal revolving around the Rupert Murdoch-owned paper, where a young murdered school girl had her phone repeatedly hacked by the paper in an effort to listen to voicemails.

Because the voicemails kept being deleted from the phone, the girl's carrier and parents believed her to be alive for days after her disappearance.

Hoare made it public that former editor Andy Coulson was fully aware of the hacking, and even encouraged it.

Police say they have no reason to believe there was anything suspicious in the journalist's death and did confirm that he was fired from the paper "for drugs and drinking problems."

Coulson was arrested this week as part of a police investigation into misconduct at the paper.

Copyright law is supposed to have an idea/expression dichotomy, in which the copyright only covers the specific expression, and not the idea. We're often told this when we worry about the expansion of copyright law being used to block out ideas. And yet, as we've explained in the past, it's not clear there's any real idea/expression dichotomy when it comes to copyright. That's because, if a judge doesn't like something, he or she will often come up with some convoluted explanation for how the "expression" covers the basic idea.

And, of course, once people begin to realize that there's no real idea/expression dichotomy, lawsuits begin to show up pushing the boundaries even further. Take for example, this lawsuit, in which a novelty gift firm called Cellrderm has sued Microsoft and its ad agency, CP&B, for "copying" some of its commercials. You can see the four commercial below, showing the (terribly produced) Cellrderm commercials, followed by the supposedly "infringing" Microsoft version:

If you watch the ads, they may have (sorta, kinda) similar ideas, but the expression is way, way different in both cases. And yet... Cellrderm is trying to claim that it actually copies the expression:

The Microsoft Commercials copy both the sequence of events and the character interplay found in the Cellrderm Commercials.... The Microsoft Commercials also copy other copyrightable expression, including but not limited to clothing, gestures, character appearance, camera angles, and other visual elements from the Cellrderm Commercials.

Yes, you read that right. They're complaining that the clothing and gestures in these commercials was copyrightable. One hopes that a judge will tell Cellrderm to stick to gag gifts, and get out of the gag lawsuit business.

I've noticed in the last couple years that major telcos have really ramped up their customer service. I've had very positive exchanges with folks at Sprint and AT&T -- two companies, which used to have reputations for horrible customer service. Sprint, in particular, appears to have made it abundantly clear to customer service agents that they should bend over backwards to help customers. Apparently, Verizon has gone in a different direction. A woman, who called Verizon to try to find out about the $4.19 she was being charged for six local calls, was told by Verizon reps that the only way it would provide her an itemized bill was to get a lawyer and have the lawyer get a subpoena to force Verizon to disclose the information.

Instead, the woman went to court (by herself) and a judge told Verizon to hand over the itemized bill info.

It is a basic matter of fair business practice that a consumer should be able to contact a utility about a charge on a bill and learn what the charge is for and learn that the charge was correctly applied. The only verification that Verizon's witness could offer that a charge like [the customer's] $4.19 measured use charge was accurate and billed correctly was her faith in the accuracy of Verizon's computer system. The only way that Verizon would offer any information about a past charge in response to a consumer inquiry was to require that customer to hire a lawyer and subpoena their own usage information. By no reasonable standard could this be considered reasonable customer service.

The judge has also suggested Verizon should be fined $1,000 for its failure here, and that suggestion will be reviewed by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

PC sandbox title Minecraft is on its way to both Xperia Play and Xbox Live Arcade, but it won't stop there. We've seen modders make the game playable with a Wii Remote, and now modder smealum has taken the entire game and moved it to a Nintendo platform.

As the video above demonstrates, a working, but very basic version of Minecraft is up and running on DS. Games can't be saved, and it's the Classic version, meaning you're free to build without having to worry about running into enemies. The basic functionality of adding and removing blocks is there, as is basic terrain generation. According to smealum, maps stream from the file, "meaning really big maps can be used (1024x1024 maps are fully playable)."

The 161kb file can be downloaded here. You'll need a way to get your file onto your DS; not just anyone will be able to play it. The inability to save is a real downer, as the beauty of Minecraft is building your world over time -- it's not necessarily the sort of thing you'd want to play from scratch every time. This is, of course, a modder's project and not an official release, so its omission is excusable. The fact that it works at all is very impressive.
